Typographic Portfolio
2022 - 2023
The following 4 projects are a handpicked selection of projects across 2022 and 2023 focusing on typography.
Project 1: 36 Days of Type 2023
The project began with colour and style exploration.
Once a colour palette and general direction was decided on, the individual letters were developed.
For some letters, an idea had already formed before they were made. Others took a bit of experimentation. When designing each letter it was important to consider how they would also work as an animation.
This was a yearly project on Instagram that focuses on typography.
Anyone around the world can enter simply by tagging the official account and using the correct hashtags.
The projects usually runs at the beginning of the year and for 36 days focuses on a letter or number a day.
Once a few of the designs were locked in, the first animations were created. One by one the letters were designed and animated.
The progress of the first approach pictured above.
This first approach felt too busy and so the design was reworked. The final piece showcases a Canberra inspired landscape.
Project 2: Dropcaps
The goal of this project was to study and replicate two artists.
One artist was Yegor Shustov, a digital artist focusing on vector illustrations. Generally depicting cities and landscapes from a distance.
The other artist was Percy Trompf, an Australian artist from 1902 - 1964 who focused on illustrations of landscapes. His work generally consisted of commercial advertisement posters promoting places in Australia.
Project 3: Dwell Magazine
Final magazine photography by Jack Lovel
The goal of this project was to study and replicate a chosen magazine.
This project began with layout sketches and then a first draft.
Project 4: Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design Exhibition Centrepiece
This project was part of a collaborative group effort to create a centre piece for the student graduating exhibition for 2023 at Canberra Institute of Technology.
